Stanford vs. Texas baseball tailgate   Saturday, February 27, 2010   12:00pm
It's about that time of year again--the annual Stanford vs. Texas baseball series comes to Austin this year for the last weekend of February. We're organizing ticket purchases so that you and fellow Stanford fans can sit together while cheering on the Cardinal, and we'll also organize a tailgate for the Saturday game for anyone interested--bring family and friends!

Donations of $13/person are requested for the tailgate, and ticket prices are listed below:

Game tickets, Friday 2/26 @ 3:00pm:
(group rate if we order 10+ tickets)
General, adult - $7
General, under 12 - $5
Reserved - $12

Game tickets, Saturday 2/27 (tailgate @ noon, game @ 2pm, no group rate):

If we qualify for the group rate, the rate for reserved tickets drops to $6. We encourage everyone to buy reserved tickets, which seat everyone together in the same section. General admission tickets do not guarantee seats next to each other. Please be prepared to bring cash or check to the tailgate if you're attending Saturday. We are working with the alumni association to bring up a website for credit card payments and will notify you if that option opens up, but you will otherwise be contacted individually about your payment options.

Please RSVP to samuel-chang@stanfordalumni.org (samuel, single dash, chang) by Feb. 22nd (the earlier, the better) with your ticket count and tailgate attendance so that we can get a good handle on the number of people who will be attending.

Please email the RSVP email address with any questions you might have. Hope to see you there!

Sun Bowl: Stanford football vs. Oklahoma   Thursday, December 31, 2009   1:00pm
Warm holiday greetings to all the Stanford/Austin football enthusiasts out there!

As you probably already know, Stanford football earned a berth in the Sun Bowl by virtue of its 8-4 win-loss record, which was good for a three-way tie for second place in the Pac-10 (with Oregon State and Arizona). The Sun Bowl picked Oklahoma University (7-5) as Stanford's opponent. Despite the inferior win-loss record, Oklahoma boasts several star defensive players and will prove a tough test for Toby Gerhart and the Stanford offensive line in their last game of the season. Balancing out that strength is OU's weakness on the offensive line, where injuries have forced position switches. Also of note: it was revealed that Andrew Luck fractured a finger on his throwing hand during the Notre Dame game, which necessitated surgery. Senior QB Tavita Pritchard, who led Stanford in the memorable 2007 upset of USC in the Coliseum, will start for Stanford. Luck will be available in a backup role as needed, it is believed. Some of us believe that Luck is more than ready to go, and Stanford will certainly need all of the offensive execution it can muster to compete with Oklahoma's defense.

Although many of us regular game organizers and attendees may be out of town, we would like to extend an invitation to any fans who are in town to watch the game at Legends. The game starts at 1PM Central time, and it will be broadcast on CBS.

Come see Stanford football's last game of the season against storied Oklahoma, and let's see Toby Gerhart cap his impressive Heisman runner-up season and career football performance with the 2009 Sun Bowl!

Three football items   Thursday, December 10, 2009   7:00pm
First, here's a message from Nick Curra, manager at Legends Sports Bar, who has graciously hosted us for most of the season, and read on after the letter for info on the Heisman trophy award presentation--Toby Gerhart looks like a pretty strong candidate!

"Hey Cardinal fans,

Wow!!! What a year for football. So we here at Legends are thankful for another season. Each year in December we send an invite to all the sports fans that are in and out of Legends during football season. This is our third year of doing this so we are getting good at slamming this one out. Let everyone know that they can bring along friends, all are welcome. We provide a complimentary buffet with lots of Roast Beef and a never ending supply of finger foods hot and cold. Id love to give the booze away but the TABC says no, so we just have to throw drink specials at you. Theres music and some great games on the screens that night. Our good friends at Budweiser will be out to help us spread some Christmas cheer. So dont find yourself at HEB picking up dinner rather come have dinner on us. I hope to hear from you & I hope you round up a posse of your football crew and come on out. So Toby Gerhart is in the running for the Heisman?

Nick"

The gathering is Thursday, Dec. 10th from 7PM - 9PM. Everyone is invited to join us!

Also, the Heisman trophy award presentation ceremony will be held Saturday, December 12th at 7PM central. We'll be at Legends to watch the ceremony, and hopefully Toby Gerhart will pull out another stunner--he's currently projected to finish second, trailing by eight points (not votes). In terms of public votes already submitted, Toby is tied with Mark Ingram of Alabama for second, with Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh leading. The drama will conclude in four days at the award ceremony!

Finally, you may have heard that the Stanford football team has accepted their bid to play Oklahoma in the Sun Bowl! This is an opportunity to either roadtrip out to El Paso or watch the game here in Austin with friends and family who hopefully do not love the Sooners more than the Cardinal. We'll keep you posted on game-watching party developments for the Sun Bowl, which will be played on December 31st, 2009 at noon. That leaves plenty of time for New Year's Eve celebrations, so mark this off for Stanford football and Toby Gerhart's last hurrah!

Stanford/Notre Dame   Saturday, November 28, 2009   7:00pm
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Thanks to the Cardinal faithful who made it out for Big Game--it was a close game til the end, and although the game didn't turn out the way Stanford would have hoped, we showed up in force to support the Cardinal, and if fan participation had counted for anything, Stanford would have won in Austin. There is one more game in the regular season for Stanford, and that's the home game against Notre Dame this Saturday (tomorrow) at 7PM.

Stanford will look to send senior running back Toby Gerhart off in style with as much Heisman hope as possible, building on a 100+ yd, 4 touchdown game against Cal. Notre Dame limps into Palo Alto, having lost in double overtime against Connecticut last week and currently undergoing a lot of scrutiny about whether their coach will be retained next season. The resurgent Cardinal offense should be clicking against a Notre Dame team that has given up an average of 24 points a game.

Apologies for the late reminder--we hope it's been a good Thanksgiving week for everyone. Join us Saturday for Stanford's last regular season game at Legends sports bar at 7PM when the Fighting Irish come to town!

The 112th Big Game   Saturday, November 21, 2009   6:00pm
Ladies and gentlemen of the Cardinal faithful,

The day approaches again when Stanford and California meet on the field in Palo Alto to contest the Axe. Neither the win-loss records of both teams or the opinions of pundits hold sway in the clash of eternal gridiron rivals, for the stories of Big Games are rife with upsets and shockers from both sides.

As you may have seen from the Stanford Alumni Association emails, we have changed our game-watching location to The Tavern, located at 922 W 12th St. in downtown Austin. Please note that although kickoff is at 6:30PM, we're asking you to show up a bit earlier because parking may become very scarce due to the high volume of UT fans who come to the Tavern (their kickoff is at 7PM; we'll have a head start).

Please make an effort to come early enough to grab parking! We don't want you to miss out on any of the game due to parking issues.

If the season comes down to one game, this is that game. Wear Cardinal red, and bring your family and your friends (Stanford-affiliated or otherwise) to see what the resurgent Cardinal will bring to the field against a weakened but hungry Golden Bear squad.

Beat Cal!

Countdown to Big Game, season recap   Saturday, November 21, 2009   6:00pm
There are less than 48 hrs to go until Big Game--are you ready for this game? Be sure to get to the Tavern early to find parking!

If you're wondering why we aren't watching the game at Legends, it's because this game is being broadcast by a network that is no longer carried by the satellite/cable package that Legends (and most of Austin) uses. The possibility has materialized--Cal fans will probably show up at the Tavern to watch Big Game in some number (because very few places in Austin can show this game). Bring your friends and your family decked out in Cardinal red, because we are not going to be outnumbered at a Stanford game party!

On to the season recap: Stanford is 7-3 (6-2 Pac-10) on the season with rankings of 14th and 17th in the AP poll and USA Today list, respectively. The three losses came at Wake Forest, at Oregon State, and at Arizona. The marquee wins were back-to-back, 50+ point victories over then-#7 Oregon and then-#11 USC in the last two weeks, propelling the team from unranked recognition to national prominence. Stanford is one of the hottest teams in the nation right now, and what a time to catch fire. Of note: the 55 points scored by Stanford last week against USC was the highest total number of points given up by a USC defense--ever.

Leading the way is senior running back Toby Gerhart, who is ranked second in the nation in scoring offense and is poised to break a few Stanford records after the conclusion of the season. He has averaged just about two touchdowns per game and is ranked third nationally in rushing yards with 139.5 yards per game. The New York Times has published an article on Gerhart and his darkhorse Heisman Trophy candidacy, which you can read here: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/19/sports/ncaafootball/19stanford.html?ref=sports

Redshirt freshman quarterback Andrew Luck keys the air attack that complements Gerhart's relentlessness. Stanford has passed for 447 yards and four touchdowns in the last two games combined, and in both games against Oregon and USC, Luck has averaged over ten yards per completion! Stanford's wide receivers and tight ends have all benefited from the deep passing attack and Luck's precision throws downfield, which have drawn the praise of sports commentators nationwide. Finally, Luck's ability to move in the pocket and run the ball has helped Stanford give up only 0.6 sacks per game, second fewest in the nation behind Boise State.

California, on the other hand, boasts a 7-3 win-loss record but is only 4-3 in the Pac-10, having lost to Oregon, Oregon State, and USC. Their marquee player, star running back Jahvid Best, was held out of last week's game against Arizona after suffering two concussions in two weeks. It is likely that Best will not play this weekend, but his back-up, Shane Vereen, has proven equally effective in game situations. Stanford's defense should look to shut down Cal's running game first and foremost. Cal quarterback Kevin Riley has been a player of ups and downs, but he is eminently capable of reproducing his four touchdown effort against Maryland this season.

The Bears have won four of their last five games, losing only to Oregon State, but notably beating Arizona, who Stanford has lost to this season. Of more importance, Cal has won six of the last seven Big Games--and Stanford is looking to turn the tide this weekend.

Bring your friends and family decked out in Cardinal red to see Stanford show Cal what it means to take on Jim Harbaugh's team in their house!

The Night Before Big Game - 2009   Saturday, November 21, 2009   6:00pm
With apologies to Clement Clarke Moore

'Twas the night before Big Game, when all through the Bay
Not a Cardinal was stirring, not even Elway;
The jerseys were hung by the lockers with care,
In hopes that The Axe would soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Touchdown Tommy raced in their heads;

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

When out on the Quad there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the tailgate to see what was the matter.

Away to Arrillaga I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The lights from the Stadium had begun to glow
Gave the lustre of game-day to objects below,

When, what to my wondering eyes should I see,
But a miniature Block S, and eight tiny tree,

With a little old driver, so lively with glee,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Toby.
More rapid than eagles his blockers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Martin! now, Philips! Now, Marecic and Dray!
On, Marinelli! on DeCastro! On, Beeler and Mabry!

To the top of the post! To the top of the wall!
Now pound the rock! Pound the rock! Pound the rock all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild blitz fly,
When they meet with a stunt, mount to the sky,

So to the goal the receivers they flew,
With the playbook full of tricks, and St. Toby too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the street
The prancing and pawing of each little cleat.

As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Who but St. Toby came with a bound.

He was dressed all in white, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with grasses and soot;

A bundle of tacklers he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a freight train pushing the pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the helmet he wore was as white as the snow;

The stump of a mouthpiece he held tight in his teeth,
And TDs encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a broad back and legs built like trees
And when he ran the ball the Bears scattered like fleas.

He was tall and chiseled, a right jolly old Card,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of my guard;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had little to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And ran over the Bears; then turned with a smirk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the field they rose;

He sprang to his left, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Big Game to all, let's hold The Axe tight!"

And with this final exhortation to bring yourself, family, and friends to the Tavern Saturday, we hope to see you all there!

A final addendum for the Big Game party   Saturday, November 21, 2009   6:00pm
In response to some questions, the Tavern does allow children, and we'll have a section to ourselves, so the UT crowd (their kickoff at 7PM) won't interfere too much with our group dynamic.

Also, the previous poem should be credited to Eric Lutkin, c/o '82. It's not our fault that Big Game is held before Thanksgiving this year...we recognize the Christmas creep as well.

We'll see you there in a few hours!

Oregon game recap, and Stanford vs. USC   Saturday, November 14, 2009   2:30pm
First of all, if you missed the Oregon game last week, you missed the official, national debut of the Stanford offense. QB Andrew Luck passed for 251 yards on 12 of 20 passing attempts, resulting in an amazing average of 12.6 yards per attempt and two touchdowns. That translates into a little over 20 yards per attempt, which signifies the emergence of the Stanford passing attack. Luck was poised in the pocket with good protection from the offensive line, and the Stanford receivers caught almost everything headed their way.

The game really rested on the shoulders of senior RB Toby Gerhart, however, who ran for 223 yards on 38 carries, scoring three touchdowns in the process. This performance should put Gerhart back in his under-the-radar Heisman candidacy, and should Gerhart shine similarly in the last three games of the year, you can expect the media to catch up on what Gerhart's been doing all season long.

The Stanford defense keyed the victory by denying Oregon from scoring on six out of fourteen possessions. Stanford's offense failed to convert on only four possessions and put together six sustained scoring drives (the rest came on short field position) and only needed to punt twice.

Having earned the #25 AP national rank this week, Stanford travels to USC on November 14th, two years after the historic upset in the Coliseum. USC limps into this game having struggled to win against Arizona State last week and having been crushed by Oregon two weeks ago. The confidence of this Stanford team should carry them a long way against a USC team still full of raw but unpolished talent.

Kickoff is at 2:30 Central time, and we'll be at Legends. Come out and see the Cardinal pitted against the Trojans in the age-old Pac-10 grudge match!

When: Kickoff at 2:30PM Central time, Saturday, November 14th, 2009
